What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is a structured therapy that helps your brain process traumatic memories in a new way. During EMDR sessions, you briefly focus on a traumatic memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements, taps, or tones).

This process helps the brain “unstick” traumatic memories, reducing their emotional charge and allowing them to be stored as normal memories rather than re-experienced as if they’re happening now.

Why Does EMDR Work?

While we don’t fully understand the mechanism, EMDR appears to help the brain process information similarly to what happens during REM sleep. It allows traumatic memories to be integrated in a way that talking alone cannot achieve.

What EMDR Can Help With

  • PTSD and trauma – single incident or complex trauma
  • Anxiety and panic – especially when rooted in past experiences
  • Phobias – fears that developed from frightening experiences
  • Childhood trauma – abuse, neglect, attachment wounds
  • Grief and loss – complicated or traumatic grief
  • Performance anxiety – blocks rooted in past failures or criticism
  • Negative beliefs – “I’m not good enough,” “I’m unsafe”

EMDR is recognized as an effective trauma treatment by the World Health Organization and numerous clinical guidelines.

The EMDR Process

1. History & Preparation

We start by understanding your history and building resources for managing distress. You’ll learn grounding techniques before processing begins.

2. Assessment

We identify specific memories to target, along with the negative beliefs, emotions, and body sensations associated with them.

3. Desensitization

You focus on the memory while experiencing bilateral stimulation. The memory becomes less disturbing as your brain processes it.

4. Installation

Positive beliefs are strengthened and “installed” to replace the negative ones associated with the memory.
