What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural response to stress or uncertainty. In small amounts, it can help you stay alert and focused. But when it becomes persistent, overwhelming, or difficult to manage, it can begin to affect your daily life, relationships, and overall well-being.

Anxiety doesn’t always look the same. It can show up in your thoughts, your body, or your behavior—and sometimes in ways that are hard to recognize at first.

You don’t need to have a clear label for what you’re experiencing to benefit from counselling. If something feels off, overwhelming, or difficult to manage, it’s worth paying attention to.

Signs You May Be Experiencing Anxiety

Anxiety can show up in many different ways—emotionally, mentally, and physically. You may not relate to all of these, but some may feel familiar.

  • Constant worry or overthinking that’s hard to turn off
  • Feeling tense, restless, or “on edge”
  • Difficulty concentrating or staying present
  • Trouble sleeping or feeling mentally exhausted
  • Racing thoughts or a sense of losing control
  • Avoiding situations that feel overwhelming
  • Physical symptoms like a tight chest, rapid heartbeat, or shortness of breath
  • Irritability or feeling easily overwhelmed

Sometimes anxiety builds gradually. Other times, it can feel sudden and intense. Either way, it can leave you feeling stuck, drained, or unsure how to move forward.

Types of Anxiety We Help With

Anxiety doesn’t always have a clear name—but certain patterns tend to show up more often. You may recognize yourself in one or more of the experiences below.

You don’t need to fit neatly into a category to benefit from counselling. These are simply ways anxiety can show up—not labels you have to identify with.

Anxiety Types General White Transparent

Generalized Anxiety (Constant Worry)

Ongoing worry about everyday things—work, relationships, health, or the future—that feels difficult to turn off, even when there’s no clear reason.

Anxiety Types Social Purple Transparent

Social Anxiety

Feeling anxious or self-conscious in social situations, often worrying about being judged, saying the wrong thing, or not feeling comfortable around others.

Anxiety Types Panic White Transparent

Panic Attacks

Sudden waves of intense fear or discomfort, often with physical symptoms like a racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, or a feeling of losing control.

Anxiety Types High Functioning Purple Transparent

High-Functioning Anxiety

You may appear calm and capable on the outside, but internally feel constant pressure, overthinking, and difficulty relaxing or switching off.

Anxiety Types Health White Transparent

Health Anxiety

Frequent worry about your health, often interpreting normal physical sensations as signs of something serious or needing constant reassurance.

Anxiety Types Life Transitions Purple Transparent

Anxiety around Life Transitions

ncreased stress, uncertainty, or overwhelm during times of change—such as career shifts, relationship changes, or major life decisions.

If you’re recognizing yourself in any of these experiences, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to navigate this on your own.

Our Approach to Anxiety Therapy

At Clearheart Counselling, we use evidence-based approaches to support individuals experiencing anxiety. Therapy is tailored to your needs, your pace, and what feels most helpful for you. Our approach may include:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Helps identify and shift unhelpful thought patterns that contribute to anxiety, while building practical coping strategies you can use in everyday situations.

Mindfulness-Based Approaches

Focus on building awareness of your thoughts and reactions, helping you feel less overwhelmed and more present in the moment.

Somatic Therapy

Works with how anxiety is experienced in the body, helping regulate your nervous system and reduce physical symptoms like tension or restlessness.

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

Explores underlying emotional experiences that may be contributing to anxiety, helping you process and respond to them in healthier ways.

Solution-Focused Therapy

A practical, goal-oriented approach that helps you make meaningful changes by focusing on strengths and actionable steps forward.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

Helps process past experiences that may be contributing to anxiety, reducing their emotional impact and making them easier to manage.

We focus on helping you not just understand anxiety—but develop tools you can use outside of sessions to feel more calm, grounded, and in control.

How Anxiety Counselling Can Help

Anxiety can feel overwhelming—but it is also highly treatable with the right support.

Individual counselling is not just about talking—it’s about gaining insight, developing practical tools, and creating meaningful change over time. Whether your anxiety shows up as constant worry, physical tension, or difficulty slowing your thoughts, therapy provides a structured and supportive space to understand what’s happening and learn how to manage it more effectively.

Through anxiety counselling, you can:

  • Learn how to manage anxious thoughts and reduce overthinking
  • Develop tools to calm your nervous system and body
  • Understand patterns that keep anxiety going
  • Reduce avoidance and build confidence in challenging situations
  • Improve your ability to stay present and grounded
  • Feel more in control of your emotions and reactions
  • Build resilience and coping strategies for long-term change

With the right approach, it’s possible to feel more calm, clear, and in control in your day-to-day life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not everyone experiences anxiety in the same way. It can show up as constant worry, overthinking, physical tension, difficulty sleeping, or feeling on edge. Even if you’re not sure what to call it, if something feels overwhelming or hard to manage, counselling can help you better understand what’s going on.

No. You don’t need a formal diagnosis to benefit from therapy. Many people seek support simply because they’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or not like themselves. Counselling focuses on your experience—not labels.

Yes. Anxiety is highly treatable with the right support. Counselling can help you understand the patterns behind your anxiety and develop practical tools to manage it more effectively, both in the moment and long term.

Sessions are tailored to you. Your counsellor will help you explore what’s contributing to your anxiety, identify patterns, and introduce strategies to manage both the mental and physical symptoms. The pace and approach will be adjusted based on your comfort level.

This depends on the person and the nature of the anxiety. Some people begin to feel relief within a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. Your counsellor will work with you to set goals and track progress over time.
