What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is a body-centered approach to healing that works with the connection between mind and body. “Soma” means body in Greek, and somatic approaches recognize that our physical experiences—sensations, postures, movements—are intimately connected to our emotional and psychological states.

When we experience trauma or chronic stress, our nervous system can become dysregulated, leading to patterns of tension, numbness, or hyperarousal that persist long after the original stressor has passed. Traditional talk therapy may not fully address these body-based patterns.

Somatic therapy helps you become aware of bodily sensations, release held tension, and develop a more regulated nervous system.

What Somatic Therapy Helps With

  • Trauma and PTSD – releasing trauma stored in the body
  • Chronic anxiety – calming an overactive nervous system
  • Dissociation – reconnecting with bodily experience
  • Chronic pain – understanding the emotional components
  • Emotional numbness – reawakening feeling and sensation
  • Stress and burnout – restoring nervous system balance
  • Attachment issues – developing felt sense of safety

Somatic Techniques We Use

Body Awareness

Learning to notice sensations in your body without judgment. This simple practice builds the foundation for deeper somatic work and helps you recognize early signs of stress or emotion.

Somatic Grounding Exercises

Techniques that help you feel connected to your body and the present moment. These are especially helpful for anxiety, dissociation, and overwhelming emotions.

Pendulation & Titration

Gently moving between states of activation and calm, building your nervous system’s capacity to handle stress without becoming overwhelmed.

Movement & Gesture

Using physical movement to complete defensive responses that were interrupted during trauma, or to express emotions that have been held in the body.

Breath Work

Conscious breathing techniques that directly influence the nervous system, helping to shift from fight-or-flight into rest-and-digest states.

Resourcing

Building internal and external resources—memories, images, relationships, body sensations—that help you feel safe and regulated.
