When to Consider Individual Counselling

Many people begin counselling when they feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure how to move forward in a particular area of their life. Others come to therapy simply because they want a space to reflect, grow, and better understand themselves.

You may consider individual counselling if you are experiencing:

  • Persistent anxiety or worry
  • Stress related to work, family, or life responsibilities
  • Low mood or loss of motivation
  • Difficulty managing emotions
  • Major life transitions or uncertainty about the future
  • Relationship challenges or communication difficulties
  • A desire for greater self-awareness and personal growth

Counselling can provide a supportive environment to explore these experiences while developing practical tools to improve emotional well-being.

Who Individual Therapy Helps

Individual therapy can support people at many different stages of life. Some individuals seek counselling during particularly difficult periods, while others use therapy as a way to build resilience, gain clarity, or improve their overall well-being.

Individual counselling can support:

  • Adults navigating life transitions, such as career changes, relocation, becoming a parent, separation, or other major shifts in life
  • Young adults adjusting to new responsibilities, identity development, or changes in relationships and direction
  • Individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, or ongoing stress
  • People coping with grief and loss, including the loss of loved ones, relationships, or significant life changes
  • Individuals working through trauma or difficult past experiences
  • People navigating relationship challenges who want to better understand their own patterns, communication, and emotional responses
  • Those seeking greater self-confidence, self-awareness, or emotional balance

Individual therapy offers a supportive and confidential space to explore your experiences, better understand your thoughts and emotions, and develop healthier ways of navigating life’s challenges.

Evidence-Based Therapeutic Approaches

Our counsellors use a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches depending on each client’s needs and goals. Different therapeutic methods can support individuals in understanding their experiences, processing difficult emotions, and developing practical tools for change.

Some of the approaches our therapists may use include:

CBT & MBCT

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) help individuals understand the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. These approaches are often used to support people experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, or negative thinking patterns. By combining cognitive strategies with mindfulness practices, individuals learn to respond to difficult thoughts and emotions with greater awareness and balance.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy approach commonly used to help individuals process trauma and distressing life experiences. EMDR helps the brain reprocess difficult memories so they become less emotionally overwhelming and easier to integrate into a person’s life story.

DBT

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) focuses on building skills in emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. DBT can be particularly helpful for individuals who experience intense emotions or difficulty managing stress and relationships.

Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy explores the connection between emotional experiences and physical sensations in the body. By increasing awareness of how stress and trauma are held physically, individuals can develop healthier ways of regulating their nervous system and responding to emotional triggers.
