What is Trauma?

Trauma is your mind and body’s response to an experience that felt overwhelming, frightening, or beyond your ability to cope at the time. It’s not defined by the event itself, but by how it affected you.

For some, trauma may come from a single event. For others, it may develop over time through repeated or ongoing experiences.

Trauma can impact your emotions, thoughts, relationships, and even your physical well-being. You may feel stuck, on edge, disconnected, or unsure why certain situations feel so difficult.

Signs You May Be Experiencing Trauma

Trauma can affect people in different ways. You may notice:

  • Feeling anxious, on edge, or easily overwhelmed
  • Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe in relationships
  • Intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or distressing memories
  • Avoiding certain situations, people, or emotions
  • Feeling disconnected, numb, or “shut down”
  • Trouble sleeping or relaxing
  • Strong emotional reactions that feel hard to control

These experiences can often overlap with symptoms of anxiety

Types of Trauma We Help With

Trauma can take many forms, and not all of them are immediately obvious. You don’t need to label your experience in a specific way to seek support — if something has impacted how you feel, think, or relate to others, it matters.

We support individuals navigating a wide range of trauma, including:

Trauma Types - Childhood

Childhood & Developmental Trauma

Early experiences that continue to shape self-worth, emotional regulation, and relationships later in life.

Trauma Types Relationship Purple Transparent

Relationship & Attachment Trauma

Early experiences that continue to shape self-worth, emotional regulation, and relationships later in life.

Trauma Types - Workplace

Workplace Trauma & Burnout

Stressful or harmful work environments, chronic pressure, or experiences that leave you feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or unsafe.

Trauma Types - PTSD

PTSD & Acute Trauma

Ongoing distress following a specific event, such as an accident, assault, or other overwhelming experience.

Trauma Types - Cultural

Cultural & Intergenerational Trauma

Experiences shaped by cultural expectations, immigration, or generational patterns that influence identity, family dynamics, and emotional well-being.

Trauma Types - Car Accident

Accidents & ICBC-Related Trauma

Emotional and psychological effects following motor vehicle accidents, including anxiety, fear, or lingering stress responses.

If you’re recognizing yourself in any of these experiences, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to navigate this on your own.

Our Approach To Trauma Therapy

We understand that trauma is not just something you think about — it’s something you feel, often in your body, your emotions, and your relationships. That’s why our approach is gentle, collaborative, and tailored to your unique experience.

Our focus is on helping you feel safe, supported, and in control of your healing process. We move at your pace, without pressure, and work together to build awareness, resilience, and meaningful change.

We draw from a range of evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches, including:

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

Helps process and reduce the emotional intensity of distressing memories so they feel less overwhelming over time.

Somatic Therapy

Supports healing by working with the body’s nervous system, helping release stored tension and restore a sense of safety and regulation.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Helps you understand and work with different “parts” of yourself with compassion, especially those shaped by past experiences.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Identifies and shifts unhelpful thought patterns that may be contributing to anxiety, avoidance, or emotional distress.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Supports emotional processing and helps strengthen your connection with yourself and others.

Mindfulness-Based Approaches

Build awareness of thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations, helping you stay grounded and present.

Trauma-Informed Therapy

Everything we do is grounded in a trauma-informed approach, meaning we prioritize safety, trust, and your sense of control throughout the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

If past experiences are affecting your emotions, relationships, or daily life, counselling can help you process and move forward.

Trauma refers to distressing experiences; PTSD is a specific diagnosis when trauma symptoms persist and significantly impact functioning. You don’t need a PTSD diagnosis to benefit from trauma therapy.

Yes we do.  Please review our ICBC Counselling page for more details.

EMDR involves briefly focusing on traumatic memories, which can bring up difficult emotions. However, the process is carefully paced and you remain in control throughout.

This varies for each individual. Some people benefit from short-term support, while others engage in longer-term therapy.
